The First Dance 4 year old, April Marie Marlin is the adopted daughter of Margaret Marlin and granddaughter of Christine Steve, all of Stebbins. In the Yup’ik tradition, a child and/or adult must perform a “first dance” before participating in any community dances. Usually a first dance is one that is specific to a family member. April Marie performed her grandfather’s dance that primarily expresses how much fun it is to dance. Viewers will note the sense of humor in the dance as April shakes her hips and winks at the audience. Families will save gifts for a “give away” to the Elders and community members. Long ago gifts were primarily food delicacies like agutaq (Eskimo ice cream) and handmade gifts. Today, gifts range from pieces of candy, small toys, socks and cups to handmade socks, gloves, tools, and comforters. Agutaq is still a favorite and served in paper cups to the crowd. |
