KAWERAK POSITION DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO:                 President

The Chief Financial Officer oversees the overall fiscal management and accountability for the organization in compliance with Federal and State requirements.  This leadership position works closely with the Accountant position in ensuring that the work performed by Department staff are completed accurately, and on a timely basis. 

BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain fiscal control, monitor and manage cash flow, coordinate annual audit, ensure compliance with Federal and State requirements.
  2. Monitor all grants and contracts, administration cost pool, over expenditures, under expenditures per budget line items and overall budgets.
  3. Oversee the corporation wide property/liability/auto/workers comp. insurance policy to ensure adequate coverage, which limits Kawerak’s exposure to loss and compliance with grant, and contract requirements.
  4. Monitor Kawerak internal financial systems and make recommendations to streamline and improve as necessary.
  5. Work directly with program directors and granting organizations regarding grant and contract budgets.  Responsible for ensuring that contracts and grants are closed out when completed. 
  6. Negotiate the corporation’s indirect rate with the cognizant federal agency.
  7. Responsible for overseeing that routine accounting tasks such as payroll, bills and reports are completed accurately and on a timely basis; the purchase order system is used properly; and the accounting cycle is closed out on a timely basis.
  8. Recommend and negotiate major equipment, rental and service purchases.
  9. Provide supervision and direction to the Accountant.  Conduct staff evaluations on an annual basis and as necessary.  Provide hiring and firing recommendations to the President.
  10. Present financial reports to the Kawerak Board of Directors on a regularly scheduled basis. 
  11. Occasionally attend evening meetings or meetings out of town which require travel during evenings, weekends and holidays.
  12. Act in the absence of the Kawerak President.
  13. Other duties as assigned by the Kawerak President.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelors Degree in Accounting required, plus four (4) years supervisory work experience in the field.  Supervisory work experience in the field of Accounting may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.
  2. Two years experience working with a non-profit organization.
  3. Must possess knowledge of computerized accounting systems and software, and skills in Internet usage, Word, Excel and Windows.
