DIVISION: Children and Family Services
JOB TITLE: Family Advocate – Village Based
POSITION STATUS: Regular, Full Time
EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt
PAY SCALE GRADE: 10-11-12
REPORTS TO: Early Head Start/Head Start Director
BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Work with ERSEA Specialist to recruit and enroll eligible children into the Early Head Start/Head Start Program; establish and maintain confidential files on assigned enrollees in target sites.
- Score the Devereux Early Childhood Assessments (DECA) provided by all Head Start/Early Head Start Centers; use the end results to identify needed services.
- Assist Education/Disabilities Specialist to reserve 10% of enrollment for children with special needs and ensure follow – through and tracking of IEP’s and needed services.
- Enter and maintain ChildPlus data on enrollees in targeted sites.
- Assist Teaching Teams to ensure that families are assessing goals, and develop programs and activities to meet them using community resources. Identify strengths/weaknesses of each family; make referrals and follow-up of needed services.
- Establish partnerships with parents that are respectful, culturally sensitive and nonjudgmental.
- Track and document all family services using ChildPlus and Family Partnership Agreements process. If necessary make home visits in order to involve parents in service delivery if necessary.
- Assist Health/Nutrition Specialist by collecting, assessing, and tracking information on each child’s health needs including vision, hearing and other screenings and follow up on health needs.
- Work with other Family Advocates to ensure that mental health observations and mental health curriculum is being done in the classroom.
- Follow Head Start Child Abuse and Neglect Policies and Standards of Conduct and Confidentiality Policies and report suspected cases of child abuse/neglect.
- Recruit volunteers for parent involvement and in-kind contributions and document parent involvement, which includes supporting parents to schedule, attend and participate in monthly parent committee meeting.
- Ensure Family Development Plans are completed with Early Head Start/Head Start Families. Coordinate with teaching teams for social services referrals and follow-ups.
- Assist other Family Advocates in maintaining and distributing resource directory and collecting survey information for annual community needs assessments.
- Assist in organizing parent orientations, policy council meetings and parent trainings/experiences: including productions of brochures, binders, and agendas.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, Head Start Performance Standards and agency and Kawerak Head Start Policies and Procedures and the Head Start work plan.
- Other duties as assigned by Early Head Start/Head Start Director or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate Degree or CDA preferred. Work experience in social services, health or early childhood preferred.
- Computer, keyboarding and office skills required.
- Must be dependable, self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
- Must be able to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds.
- Must be able to travel extensively throughout the region and occasionally attend out of town training.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- No prior convictions of child abuse in any form.
