
NOTICE OF JOB VACANCY POSITION DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Fisheries Technician
Division: Natural Resources/Fisheries Position Status: Seasonal Full Time Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Scale Grade: Range 9,10,11
Reports To: Lead Fisheries Technician
Brief Summary Of Job Responsibilities:
- Assist the Fisheries Biologist in the implementation of the program’s goals and objectives.
- Assist in the setup and implementation of Kawerak’s fisheries monitoring and research projects.
- Conduct enumeration and sampling activities as outlined in the Kawerak Fisheries Procedures Manual and ensure that the data collected is of a high and consistent quality.
- Responsible for daily functioning of camps and fisheries sampling equipment. Ensure that fisheries sampling equipment such as weirs, towers, lights, flash panels and enumeration devices are managed in a proactive manner, which minimizes the likelihood of loss of data or physical damage to those systems.
- Assist in the maintenance and efficient functioning of vehicles, boats and other equipment.
- Operate equipment safely and responsibly and to treat equipment in such a manner as to prevent loss or damage.
- Keep camp clean and treat surrounding lands and waters in a responsible manner.
- Conduct other duties as assigned by the Fisheries Biologist, Camp Coordinator or Lead Fisheries Technician.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED or 1 season applicable experience.
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision and work well with others.
- Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds and work efficiently in difficult environmental conditions.
- Must be able to recognize all species of resident and anadromous fish.
- Experienced in the operation of outboard powered boats.
- Must be able to live and work in remote locations for extended periods of time.
- Must be willing and able to use firearms for personal protection.
- Must be knowledgeable of the local region where fisheries projects occur and be familiar with the culture, traditions and lifestyles of the people of the Bering Straits Region.
