JOB TITLE: Teacher Aide

POSITION STATUS: Regular, Seasonal, Part-Time

EXEMPT STATUS: Non-exempt

PAY SCALE GRADE: 5-6-7

REPORTS TO: Head Start Director

 

Head Start is a federal program to assist children prepare for formal education in the public school system. The Head Start Teacher Aide assists the Teacher in implementing the goals, objectives and performance standards of the Head Start Program. This position is required to meet educational requirements of the program.

 

BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist with implementing the goals, objectives and performance standards of the Head Start Program.
  2. Assist the teachers and parents, using a team approach to develop individualized activities to meet the children’s needs. Assist with observations, screenings, assessments and family reviews.
  3. Proactive planning is expected. Assist the classroom teacher in preparing classroom materials to support lesson plans; create and update learning centers as needed to promote development of children. Ensure that children are supervised at all times.
  4. Assist the classroom teacher in maintaining on-going contact with families, integrating educational goals that are developmentally appropriate into the classroom to promote the health, nutrition, and education of children in the program. Implement concepts of early childhood education.
  5. Assist in monthly evacuation drills and follow safety plan when needed.
  6. Assist other program staff in preparing the snack/lunch, and supervising indoor and outdoor play.
  7. Use appropriate guidance techniques consistent with early childhood development practices.
  8. Participate in staff meetings, training sessions and meetings with other professionals or parents.
  9. Attend and maintain records of IEP meetings and coordinate on going services that the program can provide.
  10. Follow Head Start Child Abuse and Neglect Policy.
  11. Assist in maintaining correspondence with all parents.
  12. Other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher or Head Start Director.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or G.E.D.
  2. One year teaching working with pre-school program, human services or related work experience preferred.
  3. Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
  4. Resident of the community given preference.
  5. No prior convictions of child abuse or violence in any form.
  6. Must be willing to work towards a CDA (Child Development Associate), and an associate degree or degree in Early Childhood Education.
