The Bering Strait Region has 20 tribes located in 15 communities, each with its own unique environment and distinct circumstances. Many of these tribes are becoming increasingly self-sufficient, self-governing, and less isolated as they adapt to an increasingly technological world. As the world changes, our Region's residents also strive to preserve and maintain their indigenous way of life. Kawerak's Community Services Division promotes technological adaptation throughout the Region while minimizing negative cultural impacts. Modern training, tools and equipment, technological expertise, and an intimate understanding of the local cultures are used by the following programs to attain community goals. Community Planning & Development The Community Planning and Development program provides training and technical assistance to Bering Strait communities in small business start-up and expansion, as well as economic development planning and project implementation. This includes developing a community’s capacity to plan, secure funding for, and implement local projects by assisting tribal governments in developing grant proposals and providing grant writing training. Transportation The Kawerak Transportation Program provides comprehensive transportation services including: project planning; infrastructure coordination; construction and construction management of transportation projects. Tribal Affairs Kawerak's tribal Affairs program assists tribal councils in exercising their inherent right to self- governance. tribal Affairs provides training and technical assistance with; updating and maintaining tribal enrollment; fund accounting and grant management; and sponsors training on a variety of tribal government subjects. Kawerak's tribal Affairs program also monitors BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) pass-thru funds for 18 of the 20 Federally Recognized tribes in the Bering Strait Region. Village Public Safety Officer Program Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) Program is a community public safety and law enforcement service. In addition to law enforcement, VPSO's also provide search & rescue, fire prevention & protection, emergency medical services, probation & parole and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program in their communities. Wellness Program The Wellness Program's focus is on restoring a culture of wellness within the region through promotion of healthy living, development of wellness courts, education, and prevention. |
