KTP Program

KTP is headquartered in Nome with 5 Nome based staff, and village based staff at Gambell, Shishmaref, St. Michael, and Unalakleet. KTP has 4 primary functions: program management, transportation planning, project development, and construction. KTP has completed the construction of a rock seawall to protect the roads at Shishmaref. We have 3 projects scheduled to move to construction during the summer of 2005. These projects include: Dust Control Abatement on the Nome Council Highway at Nuuk and Solomon, new construction for the Solomon trail, and the rehabilitation of the Nome Fort Davis Road. Projects in development for future construction include: Koyuk Community Street Improvements, Brevig Mission Community Street Improvements, Diomede Community trail Improvements, Gambell Evacuation and Cemetery Road new and reconstruction, White Mountain Community Street Improvements, and Teller Community Street Improvements. We also provide technical assistance to the Shishmaref Erosion and Relocation Coalition.

Our areas of responsibility as described in our Long-Range Strategic Plan are listed below:
  1. Transportation planning.
  2. Transportation project development and implementation.
  3. Technical assistance for transportation and related infrastructure programs.
  4. Technical assistance on flooding and erosion issues.
  5. Advocacy for transportation, Infrastructure, and erosion protection needs.
Currently the transportation system within the Bering Strait Region is unsafe, unhealthy, and does not meet the needs of the tribal communities. Roads do not connect most communities; most trails are only usable seasonally. Access is primarily accomplished via small aircraft, and by barge during the summer shipping season.

Our principal goal is to assist our communities in building a safe and healthy surface transportation infrastructure. Secondary goals include providing employment and training, and advocacy for the transportation, erosion, and flooding concerns of the Region.
