The Kawerak Fisheries Department participates in the state and federal management process to ensure the continued health and viability of fish resources for commercial and subsistence users. The Fisheries Department advocates on behalf of subsistence fish users, collects data from region rivers to improve resource management and assists in the restoration of salmon stocks.
GOALS:
  • Ensure that reasonable salmon escapement goals are set in consultation with tribal, federal, and state entities to allow for the conservation of fisheries while providing for long-term harvest.
  • Implement research efforts to identify factors affecting fisheries resources in Norton Sound.
  • Implement conservation and restoration efforts to ensure sustainability of fisheries resources.
  • Increase communication between tribes, communities, and participating agencies.
